Nacido en 1920 \u2013como Bird, Brubeck, John Lewis y el propio Terry\u2013 no era ni <i>swing<\/i> ni <i>bop<\/i>, ni de Coleman Hawkins o Lester Young. Si acaso era de ambos bandos a la vez y, al tenor, seguidor de Don Byas y Ben Webster. Por no ser, no era ni \u201cblanco\u201d ni \u201cnegro\u201d: sus colegas le llamaban \u201cmex\u201d, de mexicano, aunque en realidad era de ascendencia portuguesa.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Al contrario que sus trabajos habituales con Ellington, estas sesiones presentan a Gonsalves y a Terry en grupos peque\u00f1os. En la primera, Gonsalves aprovecha la oportunidad de tener su nombre en la portada de un disco para explayarse, especialmente en las baladas como \u201cEverything Happens to Me\u201d y \u201cDon&#8217;t Blame Me\u201d, en las que es el \u00fanico solista y muestra en plenitud su particular sonido.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Pasando al elep\u00e9 <i>Cookin&#8217; <\/i>y Volviendo a lo de Newport, \u201cFestival\u201d es un blues que celebra su famoso solo de apenas un a\u00f1o atr\u00e1s, desde el riff que lo abre \u2013sacado de la famosa grabaci\u00f3n\u2013 hasta los caracter\u00edsticos acentos del bombo de Sam Woodyard. M\u00e1s all\u00e1 del mero oportunismo, Gonsalves vuelve a echar el resto y logra una revisi\u00f3n muy digna. Tanto aqu\u00ed como en \u201cClark&#8217;s Bars\u201d (variaci\u00f3n sobre el <i>puente<\/i> de \u201cCanadian Sunset\u201d) es abrumador el lamentable estado del piano, que resulta particularmente triste porque \u00e9sta es una de las pocas grabaciones en las que se puede apreciar a <a href=\"http:\/\/jazzofftherecord.blogspot.com\/2008\/06\/willie-jones-1920-1977-pianista.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Willie Jones<\/a>, pianista de Chicago admirado por Andrew Hill y Sun Ra, y de quien la descripci\u00f3n de cruce entre Milt Buckner y Cecil Taylor se queda corta. Sus intervenciones \u2013en \u00abBlues\u00bb, \u00abDaddy O&#8217;s Patio\u00bb y \u00abFunky\u00bb\u2013 son un atractivo inesperado de este disco.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Las sorpresas abundan, en todo caso. \u201cImpeccable\u201d presenta a un Gonsalves exactamente as\u00ed, impecable, con un domino de la balada que no tiene nada que envidiar a Hawkins o Webster, mientras que en \u201cFunky\u201d toca con una autoridad aplastante sin caer en lo banal. Terry, por su parte, est\u00e1 enorme, con toda la t\u00e9cnica y recursos de siempre y, en esta ocasi\u00f3n, sin abusar de sus trucos habituales.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">La sesi\u00f3n que cierra la colecci\u00f3n es otra excepci\u00f3n del canon simplificado de la historia del jazz. Jimmy Woode no s\u00f3lo era el bajista de Ellington \u2013y con el tiempo emigrado de lujo en Alemania\u2013; tambi\u00e9n era un m\u00fasico de s\u00f3lida formaci\u00f3n, que aprovech\u00f3 la ocasi\u00f3n para componer y arreglar varios originales y <i>cantar<\/i> en el \u00fanico <i>standard<\/i> aqu\u00ed presente. Desde el pulso caribe\u00f1o de \u201cFalmouth Recollections\u201d, pasando por el <em>swing<\/em> desbocado de \u201cFoofy for President\u201d, con sus juegos de flauta y trompeta, y el blues de \u201cThe Man from Potter&#8217;s Crossing\u201d, llegamos a \u201cEmpathy for Ruth\u201d, balad\u00f3n dedicado por Woode a su esposa, en el que parece volcar alguna ense\u00f1anza <i>ellingtoniana<\/i> en sus arreglos, y en el que Gonsalves vuelve a bordarlo.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Estas son tres sesiones impecables, con mucho <em>swing<\/em>, mucho blues \u2013no en vano se grabaron en Chicago\u2013 y una excelente presentaci\u00f3n de las bondades de Gonsalves m\u00e1s all\u00e1 del redil ducal.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">\u00a0\u00a9\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/jazzofftherecord.blogspot.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fernando Ortiz de Urbina<\/a>, 2014<\/p>\n<p>Disco disponible en Spotify: <a href=\"http:\/\/open.spotify.com\/album\/6hQbPpQus6Ii3qAA38Rs6R\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">http:\/\/open.spotify.com\/album\/6hQbPpQus6Ii3qAA38Rs6<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Paul Gonsalves: <em>Cookin&#8217;
