Con una dilatada trayectoria a sus espaldas, este trompetista y cornetista fue alumno de Ornette Coleman, Art Lande y Ron Miles. Pero el m\u00e1s influyente en su carrera fue el cornetista, compositor y director de orquesta Butch Morris, con el que ha cooperado desde que en 2005 se afinc\u00f3 en Nueva York. Tras un largo periodo de colaboraciones con los m\u00fasicos m\u00e1s notables de su generaci\u00f3n, <em>Gravity Without Airs<\/em> (TAO Forms\/AUM Fidelity), disco de 2022 grabado junto al pianista Matthew Shipp y el bajista Michael Bisio, ha tenido un reconocimiento muy destacado.<\/p>\n<p>Seg\u00fan ha sido calificado, Kirk Knuffke refleja en la m\u00fasica una personalidad multifac\u00e9tica: es en parte sabio musical, en parte fil\u00f3sofo del jazz, m\u00fasico autodidacta con amplios intereses, una curiosidad insaciable y un enorme sentido del humor. Junto con el bajista el\u00e9ctrico y ac\u00fastico Stomu Takeishi y el veterano baterista de jazz Bill Goodwin (83 a\u00f1os), nos propone una m\u00fasica que respira, espaciosa y sin prisas. El \u00e1lbum consta de trece temas cortos que saltan entre diversos estilos, con los tres m\u00fasicos en una interacci\u00f3n inventiva y telep\u00e1tica. El disco se mueve en una combinaci\u00f3n entre <em>post-bop<\/em>, minimalismo e influencias m\u00e1s amplias de texturas, espacios sonoros y una actitud algo introspectiva.<\/p>\n<p>Comienza con \u00abChoose\u00bb, en un tono algo <em>funky <\/em>con fraseos vibrantes de Knuffke sobre el bajo cadencioso de Takeishi y la bater\u00eda contundente de Goodwin. Tres de las piezas componen una \u00abGong Suite\u00bb, que es la parte m\u00e1s experimental del \u00e1lbum, con texturas abiertas, golpes de percusi\u00f3n dispersos, notas largas de la corneta suspendidas en el aire. Con una exploraci\u00f3n t\u00edmbrica m\u00e1s que mel\u00f3dica, los tres m\u00fasicos crean un peque\u00f1o microcosmos sonoro con una estructura cercana al <em>free jazz<\/em> y un cierre meditativo de la suite. En la del final se percibe una sensaci\u00f3n de calma, con los sonidos de platos y el bajo casi flotando. En otro momento, Bill Goodwin recita un poema de William Blake en el tema \u00abA Divine Image\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>En esta grabaci\u00f3n, Knuffke no se limita \u00fanicamente a la corneta, sino que pone la voz en tres piezas que as\u00ed salen fortalecidas. En \u00abWindow\u00bb (basada en un poema de Carl Sandburg, poeta y novelista de Illinois), canta con voz de bar\u00edtono fresca y vibrante. \u00abA Little More So\u00bb tiene un cierre mel\u00f3dico y aires de blues que envuelven el \u00e1lbum con calidez; y \u00abRuns Red\u00bb, con un ritmo nativo americano sobre densas campanillas de bajo y una percusi\u00f3n vibrante.<\/p>\n<p>El sonido es sobrio pero intenso. Los tres participantes contribuyen por igual al impacto final de la m\u00fasica. Sus aportaciones individuales resuenan con claridad y se integran a la perfecci\u00f3n.
