Las partituras circulaban en manuscritos y los m\u00fasicos encontraban en su o\u00eddo su arma principal (as\u00ed deber\u00eda seguir siendo, por otro lado). La aparici\u00f3n de escuelas como la Berklee School of Music y la publicaci\u00f3n del primer <i>Real Book <\/i>(a cargo de estudiantes de dicha instituci\u00f3n), trufado de partituras de <i>standards<\/i>, ocasionaron toda una revoluci\u00f3n en la ense\u00f1anza del jazz. Por desgracia el <i>Real Book<\/i> presenta innumerables errores de transcripci\u00f3n, hasta el punto de ser considerado por muchos <i>jazzmen<\/i> como \u201cthe book of lies\u201d (el libro de las mentiras). La editorial Sher Music Co edit\u00f3 en 1988 el primer volumen de <i>The New Real Book<\/i>, una colecci\u00f3n de partituras jazz\u00edsticas que combina una escritura minuciosa con una gran facilidad para ser le\u00eddas a primera vista.
