Heredero de Monk, de Bud Powell y de la m\u00fasica cl\u00e1sica de la primera mitad del siglo XX, su concepto es abstracto y avanzado, pero el <i>swing <\/i>y el <i>blues<\/i> impregnan sus composiciones y su interpretaci\u00f3n pian\u00edstica, donde m\u00e1s que buscar la primera l\u00ednea de combate se funde con el resto de la banda. En <i>Smoke Stack<\/i>, su segundo disco como l\u00edder, aborda este \u00abWailing Wail\u00bb con dos contrabajos (Richard Davis y Eddie Khan), el primero de ellos dibujando l\u00edneas mel\u00f3dicas con arco. Hill dibuja arpegios y colchones arm\u00f3nicos mientras la bater\u00eda de Roy Haynes marca el tiempo al doble en el <i>ride<\/i>.
