El baterista <strong>Dan Weiss<\/strong> nos sorprendi\u00f3 con la cualidad espacial y de tiempos que consigui\u00f3 en <em>Timshel<\/em>, su trabajo previo en disco pero en un reducido tr\u00edo. Ahora nos entrega <em>Fourteen<\/em>, atributo num\u00e9rico de una plantilla mixta que re\u00fane varias familias de instrumentos, voces y naturaleza ac\u00fastica y el\u00e9ctrica. Grupos referenciales previos a este formato, por supuesto, estar\u00eda <em>Scalator over the Hill<\/em> de <strong>Carla Bley<\/strong>, estando entre los m\u00e1s recientes que se nos vienen a la cabeza los de <strong>Tony<\/strong> <strong>Malaby<\/strong> en <em>Novela<\/em> y el de <strong>Lucian<\/strong> <strong>Ban<\/strong> en su homenaje a George Enescu con viol\u00edn y tablas indias. Aunque conviene acotar el an\u00e1lisis al terreno de bateristas-compositores como el que nos ocupa.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Tres de los m\u00e1s reputados son <strong>Jeff Davis<\/strong>, que en <em>We sleep outside<\/em> eligi\u00f3 una plantilla que se estructuraba sobre un quinteto ampliado con teclados y guitarra, antes que \u00e9l, en esa configuraci\u00f3n mixta, el que conform\u00f3 <strong>Harris Eisenstadt<\/strong> para el estupendo <em>Woodbloks Prints<\/em>, con vientos madera y metal, guitarra el\u00e9ctrica y percusi\u00f3n, siendo el m\u00e1s celebrado y conocido el proyecto de <strong>John Hollenbeck<\/strong> y su Large Ensemble, donde se perfila una dimensi\u00f3n orquestal renovada con voz (Theo Bleckmann), vibr\u00e1fono, bajo el\u00e9ctrico, piano y secciones de metal.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Pero hay elementos que van m\u00e1s all\u00e1 de un enfoque actualizado sobre plantillas jazz\u00edsticas en este <em>Fourteen<\/em>. Elegir como t\u00edtulo un n\u00famero, antes que remitir a la historia del jazz y sus <em>big<\/em> <em>bands<\/em> lo hace de la vanguardia americana de <strong>John Cage<\/strong> (las \u00faltimas obras que escribi\u00f3 antes de morir, a finales de los 80, para instrumentos ac\u00fasticos se bautizaban con el n\u00famero de interpretes que las hac\u00edan posible: <em>Four, Ten, Forty eight<\/em>&#8230;) y, c\u00f3mo no, antes que Cage incluso, a mediados de los 70, <strong>Steve Reich<\/strong> y su escueto y fundamental t\u00edtulo\u00a0<em>Music for 18 musicians<\/em>. Fue justo con esta pieza cuando su autor, err\u00f3neamente as\u00ed considerado a\u00fan, dej\u00f3 de ser minimalista. Se da la circunstancia, adem\u00e1s, que Reich adapt\u00f3 a un formato instrumental occidental el gamel\u00e1n balin\u00e9s, mientras que Weiss, ya sabemos que es un experto en tablas y m\u00fasica de la India, escribe y organiza el material como si de una raga se tratase, extendiendo horizontalmente el motivo central, sumando\u00a0intensidad antes que alturas y\u00a0compartiendo la visi\u00f3n cosmog\u00f3nica del gener\u00f3 hind\u00fa. Weiss no resulta original en su planteamiento. Adopta y cita casi de forma textual por momentos las maneras repetitivas y en planos, la heterofon\u00eda, del Steve Reich de <em>Clapping Music<\/em> (juego cruzado de palmas) y <em>Tehillim<\/em> (<em>Parte 2<\/em>) en el tratamiento de la voz (todas de mujer).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Pero incluso para un oyente avezado que contempla la estructura argumental de Weiss con claridad,\u00a0<em>Fourteen<\/em> depara sorpresas.
