Despu\u00e9s de su actuaci\u00f3n, lo conoc\u00ed en el <em>backstage<\/em> y le dije que me gustaba mucho su m\u00fasica y que ser\u00eda un aut\u00e9ntico honor que tocara con nosotros a continuaci\u00f3n. Pese a su ceguera, yo cre\u00eda que nos podr\u00edamos adaptar a lo que quisiera hacer.<br \/>\nLleg\u00f3 el turno y empezamos nuestro concierto, retomando nuestro camino atonal hacia un popurr\u00ed de temas estilo a\u00f1os 50 con solos de saxof\u00f3n. En esta parte, que estaba coreografiada y era muy complicada, Rahsaan decidi\u00f3 ponerse a tocar con nosotros con la ayuda de su asistente (no recuerdo c\u00f3mo se llama).<br \/>\nEn 1969, George Wein, director del Newport Jazz Festival, decidi\u00f3 que ser\u00eda formidable meter a los Mothers of Invention en una gira de jazz por la Costa Este. As\u00ed que acabamos tocando en un lote con Kirk, Duke Ellington y Gary Burton en el front\u00f3n de Miami, y dimos otro concierto en Carolina del Sur.<br \/>\nEl tour conjunto no inclu\u00eda el equipo de megafon\u00eda, por lo que ten\u00edamos que usar los altavoces de las salas en que toc\u00e1bamos. La de Carolina del Sur estaba equipada con peque\u00f1os altavoces de las m\u00e1quinas de discos puestos en c\u00edrculo alrededor del local. No val\u00edan nada, pero era lo que hab\u00eda: tuvimos que dar el concierto.<br \/>\nAntes de salir, vi a Duke Ellington pidiendo (suplicando) un adelanto de diez d\u00f3lares. Aquello daba pena. Despu\u00e9s del concierto les dije a los del grupo: \u00abHasta aqu\u00ed. Disolvemos la banda\u00bb.<br \/>\nCon una formaci\u00f3n o con otra, llev\u00e1bamos junto sunos cinco a\u00f1os y de repente TODO me parec\u00eda totalmente in\u00fatil. Si Duke Ellington ten\u00eda que pedirle a un ayudante de George Wein diez d\u00f3lares, \u00bfqu\u00e9 co\u00f1o hac\u00eda yo con una banda de diez m\u00fasicos intentando tocar rock and roll o algo que era casi rock and roll?<br \/>\nA cada miembro de la banda le pagaba un sueldo semanal de doscientos d\u00f3lares, y eso durante todo el a\u00f1o, estuvi\u00e9semos trabajando o no, adem\u00e1s de todos los gastos de hotel y viajes cuando ten\u00edamos trabajo.
