Efectivamente, uno de los componentes del m\u00edtico grupo <em>The Jazz Crusaders<\/em>, que a partir del 1971 pasar\u00eda a denominarse <em>The Crusaders.<\/em> El motivo del cambio fue la evidente evoluci\u00f3n en el estilo de la formaci\u00f3n, asimilando m\u00e1s elementos de <em>soul, funk, pop, r&amp;b<\/em>\u2026 siendo, tal vez, la etiqueta <em>jazz fusion<\/em> la que m\u00e1s se acercaba al sonido del grupo. Y es que Sample era uno de los m\u00e1s claros exponentes de <em>jazz fusion<\/em> sin olvidar que particip\u00f3 y form\u00f3 parte de varios proyectos de <em>jazz<\/em> propiamente dicho.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Children Of The Sun<\/em> (PRA Records, 2014) es el disco que marca el punto y final en la carrera art\u00edstica de este pianista. Grabado en Hamburgo en el a\u00f1o 2011 junto con la magn\u00edfica <strong>NDR Bigband<\/strong>, se podr\u00eda decir que el disco tiene un sentido conceptual de principio a fin. Explica el mismo autor en el libreto del CD que en el a\u00f1o 1995, en un viaje a las Islas V\u00edrgenes, concretamente a la isla de Santa Cruz, qued\u00f3 impactado por el gran contraste entre la belleza \u00a0y entre la realidad de la historia de la isla.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>\u201cPor primera vez en mi vida sent\u00ed las emociones que los esclavos sintieron en aquellos d\u00edas. Este lugar aparentemente id\u00edlico hab\u00eda sido una isla de sufrimiento y tormento\u201d*<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Le\u00eddo el motivo, uno puede pensar que va a encontrar un proyecto que mel\u00f3dicamente evoque tristeza. Tal vez incluso ira y furia. Y en cierta manera existen estos elementos, pero el compositor y el arreglista prefieren buscar la luz. La belleza de la m\u00fasica acorde con la belleza de la isla. Los once cortes del disco contienen un fuerte aroma a m\u00fasica latina. <strong>Joe Sample<\/strong>, en ocasiones parece ser un pianista con ra\u00edces cubanas (y por consiguiente la NDR Bigband), pero no hay un af\u00e1n de sonar exactamente como tal, es m\u00e1s la interpretaci\u00f3n que emerge por la influencia comentada. Pero no se limita a explorar esta vertiente. En otros momentos, en lo que a sonido se refiere, me viene a la cabeza el Sr. McCoy Tyner, otra subjetiva apreciaci\u00f3n. Entonces parece como si Sample, consciente de que se acerca el final, decide aunar en esta grabaci\u00f3n algunas de sus caracter\u00edsticas globales sumando el elemento conceptual. Hay <em>funk<\/em> con el empuje fant\u00e1stico del baterista <strong>Steve Gadd<\/strong> en \u201cI Wanna Go Home\u201d, percibo buen clasicismo de <em>big band<\/em> de <em>jazz<\/em> en \u201cBlue Abyss\u201d, hay un acercamiento a un sonido m\u00e1s contempor\u00e1neo en \u201cRumfire\u201d y degusto evidente sabor latino en \u201cButtermilk Sky\u201d o \u201cGold In The Caine\u201d por poner algunos ejemplos<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>\u201cCuando Nils Landgren me pidi\u00f3 que creara una obra para la NDR Bigband, me di cuenta de que era el momento. Sent\u00ed que el gran formato era perfecto para generar m\u00fasica acorde con la emoci\u00f3n y los instintos espirituales que necesitar\u00eda un esclavo para sobrevivir\u201d*<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">La <strong>NDR Bigband<\/strong>, a trav\u00e9s de los brillantes arreglos de <strong>J\u00f6rg Achjim Keller<\/strong>, interpreta la m\u00fasica del compositor conservando su esp\u00edritu musical a\u00f1adiendo muchos matices. Buena contundencia y compenetraci\u00f3n de cada una de las secciones. Acerc\u00e1ndose, con respeto, al sonido latino comentado en varios de los temas. En relaci\u00f3n a las intervenciones solistas, a destacar la positiva omnipresencia del productor y trombonista <strong>Nils Landgren<\/strong> que participa en seis de los once temas, y precisamente se\u00f1alar la importancia del instrumento en toda la grabaci\u00f3n, siendo tal vez \u201cBlue Abyss\u201d una declaraci\u00f3n de intenciones, participando \u00a0los cuatro trombonistas de la sesi\u00f3n. <strong>Ingolf Buckhardt<\/strong> a la trompeta y <strong>Sebastian Guille<\/strong> al saxo tenor destacan en sus improvisaciones sin desmerecer a ninguno de los restantes solistas.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Children Of The Sun<\/em> es la culminaci\u00f3n de la extensa carrera del pianista con el valor a\u00f1adido de ser un proyecto muy personal. Despu\u00e9s de casi veinte a\u00f1os, el autor pudo materializar, \u00a1y de qu\u00e9 manera!, este magn\u00edfico disco.
