Ten\u00eda ideas, una t\u00e9cnica apabullante, un conocimiento enciclop\u00e9dico de la historia de esta m\u00fasica (era un hacha en los <em>blindfold tests<\/em>) y, a diferencia de los <strong>Marsalis<\/strong> y dem\u00e1s \u201cj\u00f3venes leones\u201d, abrazaba toda la tradici\u00f3n, con un pie \u201cin\u201d y otro \u201cout\u201d (como demostr\u00f3 en el <strong>Organ Ensemble<\/strong> de<strong> Lester Bowie<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>J.C. On The Set<\/em> es el t\u00edpico disco \u201ctarjeta de presentaci\u00f3n\u201d: en \u00e9l <strong>Carter<\/strong> dice \u201caqu\u00ed estoy yo y esto es lo que s\u00e9 hacer\u201d. Alterna tempos medios y r\u00e1pidos con baladas, temas propios y versiones, y se muestra igual de c\u00f3modo con tres saxos (bar\u00edtono, tenor y alto), mostrando un sonido musculoso, pericia t\u00e9cnica -sin caer en la pirotecnia- y una querencia por introducir citas con gusto (en bastantes aspectos recuerda a <strong>David Murray<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">La elecci\u00f3n de las versiones incluidas en el CD muestran sus influencias y son a la vez originales: hay dos temas de <strong>Ellington<\/strong> (\u201cSophisticated Lady\u201d a d\u00fao con el piano, y un fabuloso \u201cCaravan\u201d, ambos al saxo bar\u00edtono), uno de <strong>Don Byas<\/strong> (\u201cWorried Life Blues\u201d, al tenor), una balada de <strong>Sun Ra<\/strong> (\u201cHour Of Parting\u201d, al alto), y \u201cLunatic\u201d, composici\u00f3n del oscuro saxofonista <strong>John Hardee<\/strong> (al tenor).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Las tres composiciones de <strong>Carter<\/strong> son relativamente interesantes <em>per se<\/em>, aunque tienen el m\u00e9rito de no desentonar con el resto. Entre ellas, destaca \u201cJC On The Set\u201d que abre el disco y sit\u00faa el list\u00f3n muy alto. La r\u00edtmica que acompa\u00f1aba a <strong>Carter<\/strong> formaba un grupo estable muy conjuntando en el que destacaba un jovenc\u00edsimo <strong>Craig<\/strong> <strong>Taborn<\/strong> al piano.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Tras este magn\u00edfico comienzo, <strong>James<\/strong> <strong>Carter<\/strong> no ha confirmado ni mucho menos las expectativas puestas en \u00e9l, pese a algunos discos interesantes. El mundo del jazz sigue esperando al nuevo mes\u00edas.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">\u00a9 Adolphus van Tenzing<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>J.C.
