Se las hab\u00eda ingeniado para tener un poco de papel pautado y el acto de la composici\u00f3n le proporcionaba un medio de conservar su bienestar psicol\u00f3gico. La inusual instrumentaci\u00f3n del cuarteto se vio determinada por el hecho de que, entres sus compa\u00f1eros de prisi\u00f3n, hab\u00eda tres m\u00fasicos: un violinista y un clarinetista que hab\u00edan conseguido preservar sus instrumentos, y un violonchelista al que los alemanes le proporcionaron posteriormente un instrumento, aunque con una cuerda de menos. <b>Messiaen <\/b>escribi\u00f3 la parte de piano para \u00e9l mismo, aunque por entonces no contaba con ning\u00fan piano disponible. Finalmente, una vez que la obra qued\u00f3 completada, se llev\u00f3 al campo un piano vertical, desgraciadamente desafinado y con muchas teclas que se atascaban. El estreno se ofreci\u00f3 en el Stalag VIII A el 15 de enero de 1941 con un fr\u00edo atroz.
