Bien es cierto que parece un manido clich\u00e9. Uno de los m\u00e1s enarbolados a lo largo de este siglo de m\u00fasica popular. M\u00fasicos de mayor o menor tallaje han narrado este sempiterno hast\u00edo de la vida. Desde Nina Simone a Ottis Redding pasando por Mississippi Fred McDowell. Sentir el blues es una defensa contra la represi\u00f3n y la injusticia. Es una defensa contra los avatares del destino. Huelga a\u00f1adir que no es una costumbre con un \u00fanico epicentro. Espa\u00f1a goza de tradici\u00f3n de blues. Eso s\u00ed, en clave de seguiriyas.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Pese a eso, el blues no siempre ha de suponer tristeza o pesar en lontananza. A veces entra\u00f1a lo contrario. Es la lecci\u00f3n que nos dan <strong>The Microscopic Septet<\/strong> con este <em>The Micros Play the Blues<\/em>. Los neoyorquinos saben lo que se traen entre manos. No en vano, su experiencia de treinta y siete a\u00f1os les avala. El conjunto liderado por Phillip Johnston y Joel Forrester vuelve a publicar disco de estudio tras ese aclamado <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tomajazz.com\/web\/?p=16540\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Manhattan Moonrise<\/em><\/a> de 2014.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Son los mismos de siempre haciendo lo mismo de siempre: Johnston al soprano, Don Davis al alto, Mike Hashim al tenor y Dave Sewelson al bar\u00edtono. A este cuarteto de saxofonistas se les une Joel Forrester al piano, Dave Hofstra al bajo y Richard Dworkin a la bater\u00eda. Ostentan el priviliegio de ser la mejor banda desconocida de jazz de todo el Downtown de Nueva York. Toda una <strong>leyenda de la noche<\/strong> ochentera. Los Microscopic siguieron el testigo de coet\u00e1neos como John Zorn y brindaron grandes y ecl\u00e9ticos discos de jazz contempor\u00e1neo.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>The Micros Play the Blues<\/em> constituye una <strong>deconstrucci\u00f3n del blues<\/strong>. Se erige como un canto a la vida. Un ejercicio magistral de compenetraci\u00f3n musical a trav\u00e9s de catorce temas. Un \u00e1lbum pleno en intelectualidad t\u00e9cnica y ambici\u00f3n juvenil. Comienza a rodar el disco con una sensual \u201cCat Toys\u201d. El teletransporte a los bajos fondos de la Gran Manzana es instant\u00e1neo. Forrester ejecuta a la perfecci\u00f3n, en compa\u00f1\u00eda de sus adl\u00e1teres, un buen blues en si bemol.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">La reminiscencia a <strong>jazz a\u00f1ejo<\/strong> es constante en todo su recorrido. De igual modo, las referencias son inagotables. Todas ellas buenas. \u201cP.J in the 60\u2019s\u201d podr\u00eda haber salido de la batuta de Oscar Peterson sin problema alguno. \u201cWhen It\u2019s Getting Dark\u201d auna el ritmo bailable de un medio tempo rock n\u2019 roll con la anarqu\u00eda del <em>Blues and Roots<\/em> de Mingus. Otras composiciones como \u201cSimpled Minded Blues\u201d o \u201c12 Angry Birds\u201d invitan a un baile de medianoche. La materia prima es de exquisita calidad, sin duda.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">La sorpresa del disco es \u201cI\u2019ve Got A Right to Cry\u201d. Una versi\u00f3n importada de la misma <em>big band<\/em> de Duke Ellington. Si se es exacto, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=UogrycMGbIs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">del conjunto de rhythm and blues de Joe Liggins y los Honeydrippers.<\/a> El tema fue todo un <strong>cl\u00e1sico<\/strong> en las gramolas de medio siglo estadounidenses. Es un detalle a agradecer al Microscopic Septet el haber rescatado dicha joya.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>The Micros Play the Blues <\/em>es una oda al optimismo y al buen rollo de la pista de baile. Por otro lado, es un recordatorio del <strong>jazz de vieja guardia<\/strong>. No se respeta en escrupuloso homenaje a los cl\u00e1sicos, es cierto. Sin embargo, Johnston comanda al detalle a la banda para alcanzar la meta en tiempo record. Swing, big band y el bop m\u00e1s primitivo. Y blues, mucho blues.
