Instrumento fundamental en los comienzos de esa m\u00fasica que llamamos jazz, alcanz\u00f3 su apogeo en la Era del Swing para perder su importancia con la llegada de nuevos estilos e instrumentos como el saxo soprano. Pero nunca lleg\u00f3 a desaparecer del panorama, siendo actualmente el castellonense <strong>Chema Pe\u00f1alver<\/strong> uno de sus m\u00e1ximos exponentes en Espa\u00f1a.<\/p>\n<p>Doctorado en Filosof\u00eda y Ciencias de la Educaci\u00f3n, m\u00fasico y docente (Universitat Jaume I de Castell\u00f3n, Conservatorio Superior de M\u00fasica de Valencia), forma parte de esa maravillosa constelaci\u00f3n de m\u00fasicos que es <strong>Sedajazz<\/strong>. Tras sendas incursiones en la m\u00fasica de <strong>Benny Goodman<\/strong> y <strong>Nueva Orleans<\/strong>, <em><strong>Chema Pe\u00f1alver tributo a Benny<\/strong> <\/em><strong><em>Goodman<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(Sedajazz Records, 2008) y <strong><em>Struttin in the front line<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(Snibor Records, 2001), el siguiente paso fue recrear al<em> Quintette du Hot Club de France<\/em> en<strong>\u00a0<em>Old &amp; New Gypsy<\/em><\/strong> <strong><em>Jazz<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(Lemonsongs, 2011). Un disco que re\u00fane todas las bondades del<em> gypsy jazz<\/em> o <em>manouche<\/em>, con ese <em>swing<\/em> particular que le imprimen la guitarra r\u00edtmica y el contrabajo, y esas melod\u00edas endiabladamente r\u00e1pidas que tejen guitarra, viol\u00edn y clarinete como una locomotora a toda velocidad y que hace que sea casi imposible no mover el cuerpo al escucharla; dentro del gran nivel general, \u201cMinor &amp; Chromatic swing\u201d es un buen ejemplo de lo dicho. Temas propios y tres versiones escogidas entre lo mejor del g\u00e9nero: \u201cPetite fleur\u201d, de <strong>Sidney Bechet<\/strong>, adem\u00e1s de \u201cNuages\u201d y \u201cDaphne\u201d, de <strong>Django Reinhardt<\/strong>; las dos primeras con un sonido de clarinete limpio, elegante y que nunca intenta sonar \u201cantiguo\u201d (al igual que en el resto del disco). Para acabar una \u201cDaphne\u201d magistral, imaginativa en los arreglos y que contiene hasta un a modo de <em>scat<\/em>. Un disco que es todo un ba\u00f1o de alegr\u00eda.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Blowing the Groove<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(Sedajazz Records, 2018) nos ofrece un cambio de registro total; dejamos anteriores homenajes a los cl\u00e1sicos para sumergirnos en un jazz mucho m\u00e1s moderno, repleto de <em>funk<\/em> y de <em>soul<\/em>, con una excelente secci\u00f3n r\u00edtmica y unos vientos tan j\u00f3venes como solventes (componentes de la UJI Big Band). El contar con un octeto le permite al clarinetista ampliar la gama de colores y unos arreglos m\u00e1s complejos pero sin perder nunca ese sentido del ritmo, ese <em>groove<\/em> \u201cmarca de la casa\u201d, especialmente brillante cuando se ponen a tocar en plan<em> funk setentero<\/em> como lo hacen en \u201cNew feeling, new look\u201d o \u201cSmooth topsy\u201d, por no hablar de \u201cBlowing the Groove\u201d, con esa l\u00ednea de bajo, ese teclado, esa poderosa bater\u00eda, los vientos llenando el espacio como si de una <em>big band<\/em> se tratara, completados con un clarinete que unas veces lleva la voz cantante y otras mantiene una conversaci\u00f3n con dichos vientos. Gran tema, como el explosivo \u201cVacil\u00f3n\u201d con el que termina el disco. Pero entre tanto ritmo tambi\u00e9n hay tiempo para un tema m\u00e1s tranquilo, \u201cMellizos\u201d, que a mi o\u00eddo le suena con un muy lejano eco a \u201cNaima\u201d, de <strong>John Coltrane<\/strong>; pero aqu\u00ed acaban las similitudes, con hermoso desarrollo de la melod\u00eda a cargo de clarinete y piano, y bajo y bater\u00eda llevando el tiempo adecuado al tema. Completa el disco la conocida \u201cSixteen Tons\u201d de <strong>Merle Travis<\/strong>, rebautizada como \u201cSexteen tons &#8216;and more&#8217;\u201d, aludiendo ese \u201cy m\u00e1s\u201d al desarrollo del tema por parte de Chema tras la melod\u00eda original.<\/p>\n<p>El clarinete sigue vivo, con<strong> Chema pe\u00f1alver<\/strong> pero tambi\u00e9n con m\u00fasicos que est\u00e1n despuntando como el ibicenco afincado en Madrid <strong>Arturo Pueyo<\/strong>, o <strong>Anat Cohen<\/strong> o <strong>Louis Sclavis<\/strong> que tambi\u00e9n est\u00e1n haciendo cosas interesantes.
