Mahanthappa (1971), empez\u00f3 a tocar el saxo con apenas diez a\u00f1os y entr\u00f3 en la escena jazz\u00edstica de Nueva York a los veintis\u00e9is. Hoy en d\u00eda, compagina la ense\u00f1anza del jazz en la Universidad de Princeton con los escenarios y los estudios de grabaci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<p>Acumula, a estas alturas, quince \u00e1lbumes como l\u00edder de sus propias formaciones y otros tantos en los que ha tocado en bandas ajenas, lo que por s\u00ed solo habla con claridad de la intensa actividad musical que ha desarrollado durante su vida profesional. Con un estilo que suele etiquetarse como <em>post-bop<\/em>, <em>free jazz<\/em>, o, incluso, <em>electric fusi\u00f3n<\/em>, Mahanthappa ha experimentado tambi\u00e9n con la mezcla de sonidos provenientes de la tradici\u00f3n musical india con otros claramente occidentales. Buen ejemplo de ello es su anterior grabaci\u00f3n <em>Agrima<\/em> (2017), que fue recibido por la cr\u00edtica con excelentes rese\u00f1as.<\/p>\n<p>En esta ocasi\u00f3n, en cambio, <em>Hero Trio<\/em> (2020) supone un homenaje a aquellos m\u00fasicos que le sirvieron de inspiraci\u00f3n en sus comienzos: Charlie Parker, Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane\u2026 Para ello se hace acompa\u00f1ar de dos int\u00e9rpretes tan experimentados como \u00e9l y con quienes lleva trabajando con regularidad desde hace m\u00e1s de veinte a\u00f1os: Fran\u00e7oise Moutin (bajo) y Rudy Royston (percusi\u00f3n).<\/p>\n<p>A pesar de que Mahanthappa est\u00e1 acostumbrado a formaciones un poco m\u00e1s numerosas, asegura que en esta ocasi\u00f3n quer\u00eda experimentar con las posibilidades de un grupo reducido casi a su m\u00ednima expresi\u00f3n, de tal manera que se potencie el sonido del saxo, como ya hiciesen en su d\u00eda Sonny Rollins, Lee Konitz y Ornette Coleman. Se trata de una grabaci\u00f3n en la que el acercamiento a las obras originales, va acompa\u00f1ada de una considerable dosis de creatividad y aportaci\u00f3n propia, como era de esperar de una personalidad tan innovadora como la suya. De hecho, Mahanthappa extiende este reconocimiento musical a nombres que van m\u00e1s all\u00e1 del jazz, como Stevie Wonder (en \u201cOverjoyed\u201d) y Johnny Cash (en \u201cRing of Fire\u201d).<\/p>\n<p>Un \u00e1lbum homenaje, por tanto, pero que no abandona la marca <em>avant-garde<\/em> por la que se ha hecho conocido entre los aficionados a quienes gusta estar a la \u00faltima. En estos momentos, Mahanthappa aguarda con impaciencia el momento de volver a los escenarios y al directo, donde espera dar a conocer su m\u00e1s reciente proyecto: \u201cFly Higher: Charlie Parker at 100\u201d. Su primera actuaci\u00f3n post-confinamiento ya est\u00e1 programada para el mes de septiembre en Harper Woods, Michigan (USA).
