Si hace unas semanas os habl\u00e1bamos <a href=\"https:\/\/tomajazz.com\/web\/?p=53768\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">del estupendo trabajo que hab\u00eda hecho en <em>Soul<\/em>\u00a0de Pixar,<\/a> ahora vuelve a ser noticia con el lanzamiento de <strong><em>We are<\/em><\/strong><strong>,<\/strong> su octavo disco de estudio.<\/p>\n<p>Al calor de movimientos como \u201cBlack Lives Matter\u201d pero tambi\u00e9n de los \u00faltimos acontecimientos pol\u00edticos en Estados Unidos, Batiste llega a este disco con dos intenciones muy claras: reivindicar el legado del pueblo afroamericano y conseguir que lo pasemos realmente bien. Ya en el primer tema (\u201cWe are\u201d), un himno en el que se sienten los coros gospel de la \u201cSt. Augustine High School Marching 100 and Gospel Soul Children\u201d canta: <em>\u201dthe country is full of stars, but they are in a war, lying in the dark, just hopin<\/em><em>\u2019 <\/em><em>to medicate, but painfully, It changes fate. We are, We are, We are the chosen ones\u201d<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Esa reivindicaci\u00f3n del pueblo afroamericano (\u201c<em>the chosen ones<\/em>\u201d), y de unos valores combativos de los que siempre se ha mostrado orgulloso, tambi\u00e9n se trasladan a t\u00edtulos de temas como \u201cTell The Truth\u201d, \u201cFreedom\u201d o \u201cSing\u201d&#8230;Y aunque es cierto que en el <em>tracklist<\/em> no hay ninguna referencia directa al asesinato de <strong>George Floyd<\/strong> el pasado mes de mayo, de alguna forma ese es el esp\u00edritu que recorre el disco.<\/p>\n<p>En \u201cWe are\u201d hay sin embargo mucho m\u00e1s que un mensaje pol\u00edtico. Porque m\u00e1s all\u00e1 del jazz de Nueva Orleans en el que se cr\u00eda Batiste, lo que aqu\u00ed encontramos es un intento deliberado de plasmar la tremenda riqueza musical que ha aportado el pueblo afroamericano a la historia de Estados Unidos. Y claro que hay jazz, pero tambi\u00e9n hay soul, funk, hip-hop y R&amp;B\u2026sonidos todos que pertenecen a la tradici\u00f3n de la <strong>Black American Music<\/strong> y que aqu\u00ed se entregan a toda velocidad, creando un efecto de v\u00e9rtigo maravilloso.<\/p>\n<p>Ning\u00fan tema mejor que <em>\u201dShow me The Way\u201d<\/em> para ejemplificarlo, en el que Batiste se presenta como un nuevo Marvin Gaye, y al que solo le falta cantar eso de \u201cWhat\u2019s Goin\u2019 On\u201d para calcarlo, cantando eso s\u00ed con un tono que recuerda a Little Richard. En <em>\u201c<\/em><em>I need you\u201d,<\/em> juega con bases \u201cboperas\u201d y el rock cl\u00e1sico y en <em>\u201c<\/em><em>Whatchutalkinbout\u201d,<\/em> no solo demuestra que el chico sabe rapear, sino que sabe hacerlo a toda velocidad, introduciendo una base de m\u00fasica electr\u00f3nica que le sienta francamente bien al tema.<\/p>\n<p>De su Nueva Orelans querida se trae una m\u00e1s que interesante colaboraci\u00f3n con Trombone Shorty (\u201cBoy Hood\u201d) y con Hot 8 Brass Band (\u201cAdultHood\u201d) se atreve con una de esas baladas R\u2019n\u2019B con las que artistas como Usher o R.Kelly llevan a\u00f1os rompiendo corazones. En <em>\u201dFreedom\u201d<\/em>\u00a0 nos invita a bailar al ritmo del funk de los a\u00f1os 70, y piano y tambores africanos se fusionan de forma maravillosa en <em>\u201c<\/em><em>Until\u201d<\/em> el tema que cierra el disco y en el que, con una risa de ni\u00f1o final, Batiste nos dice que las cosas pueden cambiar, que a\u00fan hay esperanza.<\/p>\n<p>En <em>We are<\/em> no solo descubrimos a un aut\u00e9ntico virtuoso, capaz de navegar con soltura entre distintos estilos, sino sobre todo a un creador que ha sido capaz de recoger toda esa tradici\u00f3n que \u201ccarga a sus espaldas\u201d e integrarla en la m\u00fasica actual, revitaliz\u00e1ndola y proyect\u00e1ndola hacia el futuro.
