Durante muchos meses dijimos adi\u00f3s a ver grandes (o peque\u00f1os) conciertos en vivo, igual que a ver una pel\u00edcula o representaci\u00f3n teatral en los locales destinados a ello, entre otras acciones que antes eran cotidianas. Con lo que no ha podido este virus ha sido con la creatividad de las y los m\u00fasicos; ci\u00f1\u00e9ndonos al jazz, entre 2020 y lo que llevamos de 2021 han aparecido un buen pu\u00f1ado de discos para todos los gustos y que nos han ayudado a sobrellevar el confinamiento que hemos debido mantener (sin olvidar algunas jugosas reediciones de cl\u00e1sicos del g\u00e9nero).<\/p>\n<p>Citaremos s\u00f3lo un disco antag\u00f3nico al que nos ocupa, ese intimista <em>Suite: April 2020 <\/em>(Nonesuch Records, 2020), disco de Brad Mehldau a piano solo y compuesto por una serie de piezas ninguna superior a los cuatro minutos y que fue grabado en ese mismo mes de abril, cuando la incertidumbre en la que viv\u00edamos era m\u00e1s acusada que ahora; la situaci\u00f3n parece mejorar y a Chema Pe\u00f1alver el cuerpo le ha pedido marcha, o lo que es lo mismo, grabar con una gran formaci\u00f3n; fruto de ello es este <em>Mode On<\/em> (Sedajazz Records, 2021). A lo largo de su discograf\u00eda, el clarinetista castellonense ha grabado con formaciones que oscilaban entre el cuarteto y el octeto hasta llegar en este su sexto trabajo a una <em>Big Band<\/em> de 18 m\u00fasicos tocando un repertorio \u00edntegramente compuesto por \u00e9l.<\/p>\n<p>Sabemos que una gran orquesta puede usarse como si de un instrumento musical se tratara, as\u00ed ocurre en los temas iniciales\u00a0 \u201cMode On\u201d y \u201cFirst Lady\u201d, donde la orquesta es un todo que arropa los solos de Pe\u00f1alver, pero a partir del tercer corte \u201cSlave\u201d la participaci\u00f3n individual de sus componentes aumenta, teniendo la gran mayor\u00eda de ellos la ocasi\u00f3n de aportar su solo en alg\u00fan momento; destaca el saxo alto Fran Conde con cuatro solos (uno de ellos a la flauta en \u201cAgridulce\u201d). Hablo de n\u00famero de apariciones, porque todos los solos tienen su m\u00e9rito.<\/p>\n<p>El inter\u00e9s del oyente no decae en ning\u00fan momento, aparte de esos solos citados el disco ofrece variedad de estilos, encontraremos incursiones en el <em>latin jazz:<\/em> \u201cCasco Antiguo\u201d, \u201cAgridulce\u201d y \u201cCarga y descarga\u201d (atenci\u00f3n a esas trompetas <em>calientes<\/em>), o gui\u00f1os a Brasil en \u201cClarinet a la cool\u201d; a m\u00ed que me gusta escuchar al contrabajo cuando parece que va <em>caminando<\/em> lo he podido disfrutar en \u201cCaf\u00e9 swing\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Otro aliciente para que el o\u00eddo est\u00e9 atento a lo que suena son los arreglos del propio Pe\u00f1alver para la orquesta, tanto sonando en conjunto como cuando las diferentes l\u00edneas interact\u00faan entre s\u00ed.<\/p>\n<p>Con su aparici\u00f3n hace un par de meses, m\u00e1s que anunciar la primavera, <em>Mode On<\/em> es uno de esos discos que anuncian una t\u00edmida recuperaci\u00f3n de nuestra vida anterior y que nos puede acompa\u00f1ar mientras llega.
