Tras el estupendo <em>We are sent here by history<\/em>\u00a0que lanzaba en 2020 junto a su formaci\u00f3n <strong>Shabaka and the Ancestors<\/strong><em>, <\/em>en 2021 llega dispuesto a dar m\u00e1s guerra con <em>Black to the Future<\/em>, el cuarto disco de estudio de <strong>Sons of Kemet<\/strong><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Despu\u00e9s de la grata sorpresa que nos dieron en 2018 con <em>Your Queen is a Reptile<\/em><em>, <\/em>la formaci\u00f3n brit\u00e1nica repite con muchos de esos elementos que les han llevado al \u00e9xito: ritmos caribe\u00f1os altamente bailables, un protagonismo destacado de la tuba sobre el resto de los instrumentos de viento y un jazz cada vez m\u00e1s mestizo (hasta el punto que en algunos temas es irreconocible), que se fusiona con todo tipo de estilos urbanos.<\/p>\n<p>Para esta nueva aventura, Shabaka se rodea de \u201cviejos compa\u00f1eros de viaje\u201d: Theon Cross a la tuba y el d\u00fao percusivo formado por Eddie Hick y Tom Skinner. En la secci\u00f3n de viento escuchamos tambi\u00e9n los saxos de Kebbie Williams y Steve Williamson y por supuesto, al propio Shabaka, que en este \u00e1lbum se atreve tanto con el saxo tenor, como con clarinete y flauta.<\/p>\n<p>El gran protagonismo sin embargo, es para el poeta ingl\u00e9s <strong>Joshua Idehen<\/strong>, al que descubrimos gritando contra el racismo y denunciando los abusos que sufren los afroamericanos tanto en \u201cField Negus\u201d<em>, <\/em>el primer tema del disco, como \u201cBlack\u201d, el corte que pone fin a <em>Black to the Future<\/em><em>. <\/em>La denuncia, como corresponde a los tiempos que corren, es directa y descarnada, Y as\u00ed, escuchamos c\u00f3mo Idehen se pregunta, \u201cHow can we expect the dungeon keeper to make the rules and play fair?\u201d Para a continuaci\u00f3n exclamar\u00a0 \u201c\u00a1You already have the world\/ Just leave Black be, Leave us alone!\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Ese esp\u00edritu, que se mantiene en la primera mitad del \u00e1lbum, lo encontramos m\u00e1s acentuado si cabe, cuando el hip hop del rapero Kojey Radical se asoma en la sobrecogedora \u201dHustle\u00bb mientras que en \u201cFor the Culture\u201d escuchamos al tambi\u00e9n artista urbano D Double E hacer suyos los principales esl\u00f3ganes del movimiento <strong>Black L<\/strong><strong>ives Matter<\/strong>. Incluso en los temas en los que el componente vocal queda fuera, Shabaka persevera en un mensaje que deja claro en el t\u00edtulo de temas como \u201cPick up your burning cross\u201d,\u00a0 \u201cIn remembrance o those fallen\u201d\u00a0 o \u201cThroght the madness, stay strong\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>La raz\u00f3n de ser de Sons of Kemet es la de funcionar como colectivo y aqu\u00ed, la \u201cvoz\u201d de Shabaka, que acompa\u00f1a en todos los temas, se diluye en favor del grupo. En este caso, de un jazz que se fusiona con los distintos elementos que forman parte de esa \u201cdi\u00e1spora africana\u201d que tanto Hutchings, como muchos de los nuevos m\u00fasicos del \u201cnuevo jazz brit\u00e1nico\u201d, promocionan en casi todos sus proyectos.<\/p>\n<p>Sin embargo, si hasta ahora los discos de este colectivo destacaban por tonos alegres y desenfadados, pensados para demostrar c\u00f3mo jazz y caribe pueden funcionar estupendamente en las pistas de baile, en\u00a0<em>Black to the Future<\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em>se dibuja un panorama pesimista y algo sombr\u00edo, en un trabajo que invita m\u00e1s a la reflexi\u00f3n que al \u201cpuro goce\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>En este sentido, la tuba de Theon Cross pierde la ligereza de anteriores trabajos, en favor de unas atm\u00f3sferas densas, en las que las bases percusivas, que imitan a los antiguos instrumentos africanos, no dejan tiempo para respirar. Los saxos tenores juegan en ocasiones con esquemas de \u201cllamada y respuesta\u201d propios de las <strong>canciones de trabajo<\/strong> que entonaban los esclavos y solo en momentos puntuales, encontramos una sensaci\u00f3n de cierta ligereza.<\/p>\n<p><em>Black to the Future<\/em> es un disco que supone la consagraci\u00f3n de Sons of Kemet como colectivo. Los chicos de Shabaka entregan (tal vez por primera vez) un proyecto realmente maduro y pensado al mil\u00edmetro, que le lleva directamente a la primera divisi\u00f3n del jazz actual. Tal vez, Sons of Kemet ha perdido la frescura estridente de sus primeros discos y tal vez, de alguna forma su sonido sea m\u00e1s predecible.
