Cuando uno decide interpretar a Gershwin, Basie, Evans o, como en este caso, a Ellington y Strayhorn, sabe que, si bien la mayor\u00eda de los oyentes reconocer\u00e1n y apreciar\u00e1n las composiciones, tendr\u00e1 que estar a la altura no solo de los nombres citados, sino de todos los que los interpretaron previamente.<\/p>\n<p>Sin embargo, en esta ocasi\u00f3n, el octeto dirigido por Masters sale airoso del desaf\u00edo, en buena parte debido al excelente trabajo de los m\u00fasicos de su formaci\u00f3n y al acierto de invitar al veterano trombonista Art Baron (1950- ), quien en 1973 entr\u00f3 a formar parte de la banda de Ellington, un a\u00f1o antes del fallecimiento de este.<\/p>\n<p>Masters por su parte, tampoco es un novato; tiene en su haber cuatro \u00e1lbumes firmados bajo su nombre y otros diez con la Mark Masters Ensemble, sin contar el que <strong><em>Tomajazz<\/em><\/strong> rese\u00f1a hoy aqu\u00ed y que ha salido al mercado hace tan solo un par de d\u00edas. Sabe por tanto lo que se trae entre manos y el resultado constituye una combinaci\u00f3n de clasicismo y atrevimiento. Tal vez, en algunos casos y para nuestro gusto, lleve su atrevimiento un poco demasiado lejos, como en \u201cTake the A-Train\u201d o en \u201cI Got It Bad\u201d, pero como digo es tan solo una cuesti\u00f3n de gustos, porque la ejecuci\u00f3n es impecable. El propio Master afirma: \u201c<em>Mi filosof\u00eda es que cada composici\u00f3n o tema tiene vida por s\u00ed misma. Encuentro en cada una lo que busco, que puede ser un aspecto mel\u00f3dico, arm\u00f3nico o r\u00edtmico. El producto final rara vez es el mismo con el que empec\u00e9. Esta es la sorpresa que espero encontrar al concluir<\/em>\u201d. Y es la sorpresa que encontrar\u00e1 el oyente que reciba los temas con una mentalidad abierta.<\/p>\n<p>En este caso, Masters se ha centrado en temas provenientes de un breve per\u00edodo a principios de la d\u00e9cada de los cuarenta, cuando la banda de Ellington inclu\u00eda a dos m\u00fasicos igualmente excepcionales, el bajo Jimmie Blanton (1918-1942) y el saxo tenor Ben Webster (1909-1973), a quienes tambi\u00e9n se homenajea en el \u00e1lbum. Su influencia fue tal que hoy en d\u00eda se conoce a aquella formaci\u00f3n como la Blanton-Webster Band.<\/p>\n<p>El \u00e1lbum no ofrece, por tanto, nada realmente nuevo, salvo lo que podr\u00edamos llamar \u201cel toque M\u00e1sters\u201d y esto, en s\u00ed mismo, es suficiente como para que merezca la pena revisitar cl\u00e1sicos ya conocidos, pero con la garant\u00eda de que los escucharemos como si fuese la primera vez.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">Texto: \u00a9 <strong>Juan F.
