Como ha sucedido con muchos otros colegas, la grabaci\u00f3n ha estado muy condicionada por la pandemia. Hasta su reciente lanzamiento, el disco ha estado sometido a distintas vicisitudes y cambios en el proceso de grabaci\u00f3n. Inicialmente estaba previsto que se grabara en Nueva York en febrero de 2020. El tr\u00edo hab\u00eda estado tocando en enero durante 6 noches en el Village Vanguard, pero el aumento de los contagios hizo que se pospusiera todo hasta agosto en un estudio de Nashville.<\/p>\n<p><em>Squint<\/em>, su d\u00e9cimo segundo trabajo como l\u00edder, es una versi\u00f3n singularmente moderna de la tradici\u00f3n de la casa Blue Note, con melod\u00edas que hacen referencia a estilos cl\u00e1sicos y que funcionan muy bien como excusas para la improvisaci\u00f3n, territorio en el que se mueve Lage como pez en el agua.<\/p>\n<p>Existe un debate sobre si los tr\u00edos dirigidos por guitarras, otro instrumento de acordes, han reemplazado a los tr\u00edos de piano en la evoluci\u00f3n del jazz. \u00a0Lo cierto es que, los tr\u00edos de guitarra contin\u00faan traspasando los l\u00edmites de la m\u00fasica o, como en el caso del debut de Lage en Blue Note, <em>Squint<\/em>, aportan un nuevo giro al territorio l\u00edrico en el que sobresali\u00f3 Bill Evans.<\/p>\n<p>Todas menos dos de las once pistas del disco son originales de Lage y van desde <em>blues o jazz rock<\/em>, hasta baladas exquisitamente hermosas.<\/p>\n<p>Lage brilla en todo el disco y est\u00e1 muy bien acompa\u00f1ado por el contrabajista Jorge Roeder, varios a\u00f1os juntos, y el baterista Dave King, de sobra conocido porque forma parte del tr\u00edo The Bad Plus.<\/p>\n<p>A pesar de la gran interacci\u00f3n que existe entre los tres m\u00fasicos, este es un \u00e1lbum donde se pone de manifiesto la gran personalidad de Lage como improvisador y compositor. Cada uno de los temas muestra estados de \u00e1nimo y momentos en\u00e9rgicos elegantemente tejidos, gestos de contrapunto y asimetr\u00edas diversas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u00c9tude\u201d, una pieza intimista con la que empieza el \u00e1lbum, muestra la esencia de su gran capacidad de improvisaci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFamiliar Flower\u201d se adentra en un terreno tradicional donde homenajea a Charles Lloyd, con quien ha colaborado en varias ocasiones. Con un gran despliegue, los m\u00fasicos avanzan a ritmo vertiginoso con una r\u00edtmica asim\u00e9trica. Los m\u00fasicos se separan en un proceso de abstracci\u00f3n creciente, volviendo otra vez a juntarse en una notable exhibici\u00f3n de genialidad colectiva.<\/p>\n<p>En el tema \u201cSquint\u201d el guitarrista rinde tributo a uno de sus m\u00fasicos favoritos, que es el bater\u00eda Billy Higgins, quien toc\u00f3 con muchas estrellas de Blue Note en los a\u00f1os 60. En el tema hay cierta asociaci\u00f3n libre, asignando notas de un solo de Higgins traducidas a la guitarra, que supone una conexi\u00f3n con el tema \u201cLine Up\u201d de Lennie Tristano.\u00a0 Este tema es una celebraci\u00f3n de ambos m\u00fasicos.<\/p>\n<p>Lage tambi\u00e9n se remonta al lado l\u00edrico de los 60 con una versi\u00f3n de \u201cEmily\u201d de Johnny Mandel, una balada que aprendi\u00f3 cuando era joven y que siempre quiso grabar. Sus composiciones \u00abDay And Age\u00bb y \u00abQuiet Like A Flower\u00bb son otras baladas igual de hermosas.<\/p>\n<p>El tiempo en el universo musical de Lage es cada vez m\u00e1s una construcci\u00f3n mutable y ello es, seg\u00fan ha dicho Lage, reflejo de su creciente asociaci\u00f3n con la escuela de improvisaci\u00f3n libre de John Zorn. Desde 2018 Lage y Roeder vienen participando en el proyecto \u201cNew Masada\u201d de Zorn. Esta es una l\u00ednea que recorre gran parte del disco, incluso en melod\u00edas respaldadas por sencillas referencias r\u00edtmicas como \u201cTwilight Surfer\u201d, \u201cDay And Age\u201d o \u201cSaint Rose\u201d. Con un suave ritmo de fondo, cambian de sutiles giros m\u00e9tricos a bruscos arm\u00f3nicos y otras t\u00e9cnicas que imponen un tipo de elasticidad improvisada.
