Este fue su nombre profesional. Su verdadero nombre era Edward F. Davis.<\/li>\n<li>Fue un m\u00fasico autodidacta, aunque progres\u00f3 tan r\u00e1pidamente que Benny Carter lo llam\u00f3 para tocar con \u00e9l a partir de 1942.<\/li>\n<li>Antes de tocar por primera vez con Count Basie toc\u00f3 tanto en el seno de grandes formaciones, como en peque\u00f1os grupos. Lo hizo en compa\u00f1\u00eda de Louis Armstrong, Andy Kirk o Sidney Calett.<\/li>\n<li>Tras dejar a Basie en 1953 dirigi\u00f3 peque\u00f1as formaciones en clubs de baile de Nueva York.<\/li>\n<li>En 1957 volvi\u00f3 junto a Basie a quien acompa\u00f1\u00f3 en una gira europea y en sus primeros discos para Roulette. La asociaci\u00f3n no dur\u00f3 demasiado tiempo.<\/li>\n<li>En 1960 se asoci\u00f3 con Johnny Griffin, con quien form\u00f3 un t\u00e1ndem que recuperaba los d\u00faos explosivos de saxos tenores que tanto \u00e9xito hab\u00edan tenido con parejas como Dexter Gordon &#8211; Wardell Grey o Sonny Stitt &#8211; Gene Ammons.
