Tantas posibilidades por delante, tantas promesas por cumplir y, en ocasiones, tanto talento por desarrollar\u2026 Este es el caso de este ensemble de jazz que procede de la Ball State University, de Muncie, Indiana. S\u00ed, esa ciudad con la que los norteamericanos bromean cuando quieren referirse a alg\u00fan sitio ubicado en <em>el-fin-del-mundo<\/em>. Pues resulta que hay vida en Muncie. Vida, cultura y buena m\u00fasica. He aqu\u00ed la prueba.<\/p>\n<p>La Escuela de M\u00fasica de la Ball State dispone de tres <em>ensembles<\/em> y siete combos en los que los alumnos pueden adquirir experiencia a la vez que se forman en sus respectivas disciplinas. A los conciertos que regularmente ofrecen, a\u00f1aden ahora esta grabaci\u00f3n, integrada por cinco temas que los alumnos han compuesto o arreglado, m\u00e1s un sexto que viene firmado por su profesor y director, Scott Routenberg. Una aut\u00e9ntica prueba de fuego para estos j\u00f3venes, que sin duda hubieron de sentir la presi\u00f3n, pues las actuaciones en directo pasan, pero las grabaciones quedan. Pero creo que pueden respirar tranquilos, pues el resultado, en conjunto, es m\u00e1s que digno.<\/p>\n<p>La pieza que abre la colecci\u00f3n es \u201cTempest\u201d, de Alex Kastner, quien se inspir\u00f3 tanto en la pandemia que en aquellos momentos les obligaba a grabar los temas manteniendo la distancia social, como en un hurac\u00e1n tropical. Dos elementos sin relaci\u00f3n aparente alguna, que, de a pesar de todo han dado como resultado esta correcta pieza instrumental.<\/p>\n<p>Pasamos luego a \u201cUp A Lazy River\u201d, compuesta en su d\u00eda por Hoagy Carmichael y Sidney Arodin, que nos llega con los arreglos del trombonista del <em>ensemble<\/em> Peter Lehmann. En ese caso Lehmann tom\u00f3 como referencia el trabajo que Sammy Nestico sol\u00eda hacer para la banda de Count Basie. Se trata de un est\u00e1ndar que ha sido interpretado por muy diversos m\u00fasicos y cantantes, desde Sidney Bechet a Michael Bubl\u00e9 (y pasando por Dean Martin o nuestro querido Louis Prima). El resultado es bastante aceptable, pero gracias, sobre todo, a la competencia de los m\u00fasicos. Es dif\u00edcil mejorar algo bueno.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMiss Serenity\u201d es una composici\u00f3n de resonancias un tanto oscuras que firma el trombonista Aron Scott Callard, quien busc\u00f3 inspiraci\u00f3n en \u201c<em>la habilidad para escribir baladas<\/em>\u201d de otro trombonista, Bob Brookmeyer, seg\u00fan sus propias palabras. De nuevo, la destreza de los m\u00fasicos con sus instrumentos salva el d\u00eda.<\/p>\n<p>El cuarto tema, \u201cStruttin\u2019\u201d, en cambio, resulta mucho m\u00e1s \u201csuelto\u201d y revela que su compositor, el pianista Errol Zlovic, no hizo un esfuerzo consciente para que el resultado sonase excesivamente elaborado, sino que se dej\u00f3 llevar por su inspiraci\u00f3n, como \u00e9l mismo confiesa. Un acierto del que pueden tomar buena nota sus compa\u00f1eros.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLate Nights\u201d es una composici\u00f3n formalmente correcta del saxo tenor Trevor Mather: \u201c<em>Durante los \u00faltimos meses he estado trabajando una y otra vez con canciones compuestas por Thad Jones, Quincy Jones y Sammy Nestico una y otra vez. Me inspiraba c\u00f3mo esos compositores pueden hacer temas que sean a la vez simples y complejos<\/em>\u201d. S\u00ed, un \u201ctruco\u201d para el que se requiere una combinaci\u00f3n de experiencia y talento a partes iguales. En cualquier caso, Mather puede sentirse satisfecho del resultado.<\/p>\n<p>Y por \u00faltimo, el profesor de todos ellos, Scott Routenberg, compone la pieza que adem\u00e1s da t\u00edtulo al \u00e1lbum (para eso es el profesor), \u201cI Can See The Other Side\u201d, con la que en su momento quiso conmemorar la toma de posesi\u00f3n del actual presidente de los USA, Joe Biden. Su disonancia pretende captar \u201c<em>el creciente caos pol\u00edtico<\/em>\u201d de ese a\u00f1o y evoluciona a trav\u00e9s de diversos momentos clim\u00e1ticos, concluyendo con \u201c<em>una nota ambigua que refleja la divisi\u00f3n del pa\u00eds<\/em>\u201d. \u00a1Guau! Eso s\u00ed que es ponerse el list\u00f3n alto. Y sin embargo, y a pesar de lo ambicioso de sus intenciones, yo dir\u00eda que el resultado revela la madurez del compositor, quien imparte clases de piano jazz\u00edstico en la Ball State University School of Music. Se trata de un tema que los aficionados de cualquier lugar del mundo disfrutar\u00e1n, independientemente de las implicaciones pol\u00edticas que contiene.<\/p>\n<p>En conjunto y como hemos dicho al principio, es un buen \u00e1lbum, con seis composiciones que, si bien no ser\u00e1n memorables, s\u00ed que tienen la suficiente calidad como para merecer la atenci\u00f3n de los aficionados. Desde luego, de lo que no cabe ninguna duda es de la calidad de los int\u00e9rpretes, as\u00ed que si finalmente sus carreras como compositores o arreglistas no prosperan, siempre podr\u00e1n salir adelante como m\u00fasicos de primer nivel, a los que cualquier compositor estar\u00eda encantado de entregar sus partituras.
