Es una buena ocasi\u00f3n para conocer la m\u00fasica de este guitarrista que ha decidido elaborar su s\u00e9ptimo \u00e1lbum versionando temas firmados por nombres reconocibles (Davis, Hancock, Monk, Wheeler,\u2026), si bien ha preferido recurrir a composiciones no demasiado escuchadas. Esto en s\u00ed mismo ya me parece un acierto, pues la calidad no siempre va de la mano con la popularidad y ser\u00eda una pena que temas valiosos, como los que Pilon recupera, caigan en el olvido.<\/p>\n<p>Dicho esto, hay que a\u00f1adir que la competencia del guitarrista franc\u00e9s y de los acompa\u00f1antes que ha elegido \u2014Yoni Zelnick, en el contrabajo y Jeff Ballard a la bater\u00eda\u2014 garantizan ya de antemano que el resultado ser\u00e1 satisfactorio. Los tres han tomado como punto de partida las once composiciones originales que integran este \u00e1lbum para elaborar desarrollos musicales que estamos seguros satisfar\u00e1n a los amantes del <em>bebop<\/em>, a pesar de la ausencia de instrumentos de viento en el grupo.<\/p>\n<p>Se trata de un \u00e1lbum lleno de m\u00fasica serena, intimista; l\u00edrica en algunos momentos y r\u00edtmica en otros, donde podemos encontrar por ejemplo el ya mencionado \u201cSide Car\u201d, de Miles; \u201cLament\u201d, de J. J. Johnson; \u201cBye Ya\u201d, de Monk; \u201cNicolette\u201d, de Wheeler; o \u201cTextures\u201d, de Hancock. Son temas todos ellos con los que Pilon est\u00e1 familiarizado, pues lleva a\u00f1os interpret\u00e1ndolos en sus directos y esa familiaridad se deja sentir hasta el punto de que en muchos casos, se puede decir que son m\u00e1s suyos que de los compositores originales.<\/p>\n<p>Romain Pilon se form\u00f3 en los States, en el Berklee Colege of Music, de Boston, pero regres\u00f3 a su pa\u00eds hace ya casi dos d\u00e9cadas y desde entonces ha desarrollado una carrera musical en la que alterna las colaboraciones con otros artistas, las grabaciones firmadas por \u00e9l mismo y la ense\u00f1anza musical.<\/p>\n<p>En cuanto a sus colaboradores en este disco, Jeff Ballard es un percusionista de sobra conocido en los ambientes jazz\u00edsticos, que empez\u00f3 con Chick Corea y se uni\u00f3 m\u00e1s tarde al tr\u00edo de Brad Mehldau, mientras que el contrabajista Yoni Zelnik ha colaborado con la cantante Youn Sun Nah, el pianista Yonathan Avishai o el saxofonista G\u00e9raldine Laurent, entre otros.<\/p>\n<p>Buenos m\u00fasicos, de los que no se limitan a seguir la partitura, sino que arriesgan a navegar por sonidos que nos ofrecen nuevas formas de apreciar composiciones que ya hab\u00edamos escuchado antes.<\/p>\n<p>Decir, finalmente, que el disco ha visto la luz gracias a un proceso de <em>crowdfunding<\/em> que a lo largo de medio a\u00f1o logr\u00f3 reunir los fondos necesarios para costear los gastos de grabaci\u00f3n, dise\u00f1o y distribuci\u00f3n. Son tiempos dif\u00edciles para los artistas (\u00a1y cu\u00e1ndo no!) y f\u00f3rmulas como esta permiten en muchos casos seguir disfrutando de trabajos que, de no ser por ellas, nunca llegar\u00edan hasta nosotros.
