Hist\u00f3ricamente, su importancia en la historia del jazz radica en que public\u00f3 las obras de algunos de los grandes del <em>free jazz<\/em> en el plena emergencia del g\u00e9nero. Las primeras referencias fueron grabaciones de <strong>Albert<\/strong> <strong>Ayler<\/strong>, <strong>Pharoah<\/strong> <strong>Sanders<\/strong>, <strong>New<\/strong> <strong>York<\/strong> <strong>Art<\/strong> <strong>Quartet<\/strong>, <strong>The<\/strong> <strong>Byron<\/strong> <strong>Allen<\/strong> <strong>Trio<\/strong>, <strong>Ornette<\/strong> <strong>Coleman<\/strong>, <strong>Giuseppi<\/strong> <strong>Logan<\/strong> y <strong>Paul<\/strong> <strong>Bley<\/strong>. Con un funcionamiento ajeno a la l\u00f3gica del negocio discogr\u00e1fico y a una cierta coherencia estil\u00edstica, tambi\u00e9n estuvo abierto a la publicaci\u00f3n de obras de grupos de rock <em>underground<\/em> como <strong>the Fugs<\/strong>, <strong>The<\/strong> <strong>Godz<\/strong>, <strong>Pearls<\/strong> <strong>Before<\/strong> <strong>Swine<\/strong> y a figuras como el escritor <strong>William S. Burroughs<\/strong>, el estudioso de las drogas psicod\u00e9licas <strong>Thimoty<\/strong> <strong>Leary\u00a0<\/strong>e incluso del asesino <strong>Charles<\/strong> <strong>Manson<\/strong>. En un determinado momento el sello par\u00f3 su actividad, aunque su cat\u00e1logo nunca dej\u00f3 de estar disponible al haber sido publicado intermitentemente a lo largo del tiempo por distintos sellos.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">El periodista y escritor <strong>Jason<\/strong> <strong>Weiss<\/strong> indaga en la historia del sello sumergi\u00e9ndose en dos fuentes. La primera parte del libro <em>Always in Trouble. An Oral History of ESP-Disk&#8217;, the Most Outrageous Label in America<\/em> est\u00e1 dedicada a una serie de entrevistas con <strong>Bernard<\/strong> <strong>Stollman<\/strong>, el abogado que puso en marcha este sello en 1963, y que tras su jubilaci\u00f3n lo ha vuelto a reactivarlo publicando nuevas grabaciones de m\u00fasicos como <strong>Joe<\/strong> <strong>Morris<\/strong>, <strong>Talibam!<\/strong> o <strong>Charles<\/strong> <strong>Gayle<\/strong>, y recuperando grabaciones de cl\u00e1sicos como <strong>Billie<\/strong> <strong>Holiday<\/strong> o <strong>Charlie<\/strong> <strong>Parker<\/strong>. A lo largo de 80 p\u00e1ginas este abogado relata la forma casi <em>amateur<\/em> en que funcionaba el sello y los distintos problemas a los que seg\u00fan \u00e9l se enfrent\u00f3 a lo largo de los a\u00f1os. La segunda parte del libro (m\u00e1s de 200 p\u00e1ginas) est\u00e1 dedicada a 39 entrevistas con distintos artistas (algunos de los cuales grabaron en ESP) e incluso alg\u00fan personaje relacionado con el negocio discogr\u00e1fico como <strong>Leo<\/strong> <strong>Feigin<\/strong> (de Leo Records). En estas son interesantes las opiniones que vierten los artistas ajenos al sello, aunque lo m\u00e1s jugoso son las opiniones de quienes grabaron en <strong>ESP<\/strong>, ya que en algunos casos (no en todos) las relaciones con <strong>Stollman<\/strong> y su discogr\u00e1fica no terminaron precisamente de un modo amistoso.
