Corr\u00eda el a\u00f1o 1959, que ustedes recordar\u00e1n bien porque fue cuando Truffaut estren\u00f3 <em>Les Quatre Cents Coups<\/em>; Alain Resnais, <em>Hiroshima mon amor<\/em>; y Louis Malle, <em>Ascenseur pour L\u2019echafaud<\/em>, mientras en Par\u00eds, Jackson Pollock marcaba la pauta a los expresionistas abstractos. As\u00ed que ya se hacen una idea del ambiente cultural que se respiraba entre nuestros vecinos del norte.<\/p>\n<p>En su pel\u00edcula, <em>Orfeo negro<\/em>, Marcel Camus recreaba el mito cl\u00e1sico del amor tr\u00e1gico de Orfeo por Eur\u00eddice, la muerte de esta, y la bajada de aquel al Inframundo, en busca de su amada. Una vez all\u00ed, Hades, custodio del pa\u00eds de los muertos, accede a dejar salir a Eur\u00eddice, pero con una condici\u00f3n: Orfeo solo podr\u00e1 llev\u00e1rsela, si no mira hacia atr\u00e1s en ning\u00fan momento hasta haber abandonado el reino de la oscuridad. Una historia as\u00ed requiere una banda sonora apropiada y Camus se la encarg\u00f3 a varios compositores brasile\u00f1os, que en aquellos momentos estaban en pleno proceso de dar forma a lo que pronto iba a ser conocido en todo el mundo como la <em>bossa nova<\/em>: Antonio Carlos Jobim, Vinicius de Moraes y Luiz Bonf\u00e1. Fue este \u00faltimo quien compuso la partitura de este tema, mientras que el letrista fue Ant\u00f4nio Maria.<\/p>\n<p>La pel\u00edcula, como ya habr\u00e1n adivinado, result\u00f3 un \u00e9xito rotundo y se llev\u00f3 el Premio Palma de Oro en Cannes (1959) y el Oscar a la Mejor Pel\u00edcula en Lengua Extranjera (1960). Sin duda, el tema principal, \u201cManha de Carnaval\u201d, tuvo mucho que ver con la excelente acogida que recibi\u00f3, una melod\u00eda tan emotiva que <em>duele<\/em> escucharla (pero con esa clase de <em>dolor<\/em> que no queremos que termine nunca). Por supuesto, a lo largo del tiempo ha sido versionada por docenas y docenas de artistas del jazz y de la m\u00fasica ligera en todo el mundo: Wayne Shorter, Stan Getz, Quincy Jones, Cal Tjader, Paul Desmond, Gerry Mulligan, Perry Como, Joan Baez, Percy Faith, Jos\u00e9 Feliciano\u2026 \u00bfpara qu\u00e9 seguir?<\/p>\n<p>La versi\u00f3n que hemos elegido es la que hizo Vince Guaraldi Trio, porque la sensibilidad de este pianista siempre fue sobresaliente y porque la historia tambi\u00e9n tiene su puntito de drama. En 1962, Guaraldi grab\u00f3 un \u00e1lbum con el que intentaba sacar partido del auge que estaba teniendo la <em>bossa nova<\/em> en los Estados Unidos. En el \u00e1lbum, <em>Jazz Impressions on Black Orpheus<\/em>, versioneaban temas que se hab\u00edan vuelto muy populares a partir del \u00e9xito de la pel\u00edcula, entre ellos \u201cManha de Carnaval\u201d, que fue elegido por la discogr\u00e1fica, Fantasy Records, para un single promocional.<\/p>\n<p>Pero he aqu\u00ed que, en la cara B iba el tema \u201cCast Your Fate to the Wind\u201d, que a los DJs les gust\u00f3 tanto que era el \u00fanico que pon\u00edan en la radio. Al a\u00f1o siguiente, \u201cCast Your Fate to the Wind\u201d apareci\u00f3 en un documental sobre Charlie Brown (ya saben, Carlitos, el de los <em>Peanuts<\/em>) y qued\u00f3 vinculado para siempre al personaje de dibujos animados, mientras que la versi\u00f3n de Guaraldi de \u201cManha de Carnaval\u201d se ve\u00eda relegada a una relativa oscuridad. Hasta el d\u00eda de hoy, en que <em>Tomajazz Remembers<\/em> la rescata del Inframundo para ofrec\u00e9rsela a ustedes.<\/p>\n<p>En cuanto a Marcel Camus, decirles que al poco de terminar la pel\u00edcula se cas\u00f3 con Marpessa Dawn, la actriz que en el film interpretaba a Eur\u00eddice, pero de la que se divorci\u00f3 poco despu\u00e9s para casarse con Lourdes de Oliveira, que, a su vez, interpretaba a Mira, la rival de la anterior. Alg\u00fan tiempo despu\u00e9s, Lourdes de Oliveira se retir\u00f3 del cine y el matrimonio se mud\u00f3 a Par\u00eds, donde vivieron felices hasta el fin de sus d\u00edas.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a1Ah, s\u00ed! No les he dicho c\u00f3mo termina la historia de los dos enamorados m\u00edticos; pues aqu\u00ed est\u00e1 el final: Orfeo, de camino al mundo exterior, no puede resistir la tentaci\u00f3n y vuelve la mirada para ver si su amada le sigue, con lo cual Eur\u00eddice queda condenada para siempre.
